Welcome to Summer 2024 at Washington Square Academy!
Study of a Great American City: Boston, Massachusetts
This year we are excited to offer a program that will expose international, domestic, and local students in Grades 2 – 8 to Boston’s rich history and its leadership in the areas of literature, healthcare, education, science, technology, and the arts.
The program session is three-weeks long and will run twice:
Session I: June 24 – July 12:
Week 1: June 24 – June 28; Week 2: July 1 – July 5; Week 3: July 8 – July 12
Session II: July 15 – August 2:
Week 1: July 15 – July 19; Week 2: July 22 – July 26; Week 3: July 29 – August 2
Students may enroll for the first session, the second session, or both sessions! While some of the broad course content from Session I will be repeated in Session II, students who wish to attend both sessions will find plenty of new and interesting things to learn in the second session. For instance, as noted on the session overview below, STEM study will focus on physics and astronomy during Session I and on chemistry and biology in Session II. Additionally, students who attend both sessions may (if they feel comfortable doing so, and with the guidance of teachers) play a role in instructing and sharing their newly-acquired knowledge and expertise with new students!
Through daily classroom instruction and field trips, students in each session will discover the very best that the city of Boston has to offer–while hopefully also engaging in some self-discovery along the way! Classroom instruction will emphasize the acquisition of academic skills through fun and creativity. Some classroom instruction will take place in two separate groupings, with one group for students in Grades 2 – 5 and another for students in Grades 6 – 8. Field trips to important sites and institutions will teach all students, Grades 2 – 8, how to navigate public transportation systems; order meals in restaurants and from food stands; display proper New England etiquette; and generally navigate American city life like a sophisticated native!
